Fitness for Life was one of the very first courses developed at the Open High School of Utah (now Mountain Heights Academy) in 2009. Since its launch, teachers and curriculum directors have continually enhanced the course by improving accessibility, incorporating student feedback, and streamlining content to create a dynamic and engaging learning experience. Because it was built using open educational resources (OER), the transformation from the original 2009 version to the 2015 edition represents a major upgrade in both the depth of content and the breadth of topics covered, all while meeting state standards.
Founded in 2009, Mountain Heights Academy is an online public charter school designed to meet the needs of 21st-century learners. The school leverages innovative technology, service learning, student-centered instruction, and personal responsibility to empower student success. Serving more than 700 students statewide in grades 7–12, Mountain Heights Academy was the first secondary school in the world to develop its entire curriculum as open source content and share it globally.
Today, Mountain Heights continues to stand as one of the most innovative and forward-thinking digital academies, providing equal access to high-quality digital resources not only across Utah, but also nationally and internationally.
