Open Infrastructure Award

LibreTexts / OER Remixer

University of California-Davis (CA, United States)

The LibreTexts project answers the call for affordable and accessible online educational resources that anyone can access. LibreTexts is one of the most popular Open Educational Resource (OER) on the internet, with approximately 800 million page views freely delivered to students since 2008 resulting in over six millennia of confirmed reading. LibreTexts’ curated library of over two thousand books, and half-a-million individual pages of freely available content are spread across 14 college-level disciplines. This innovative project creates more equitable access for students to high-quality textbooks and online learning technologies and enables instructors to easily create customized resources for their students that help drive learning gains.

In addition to the educational content, new technologies included in the LibreTexts enhance access, increase interactivity, create opportunities for practice and self-testing, and promote peer-to-peer engagement. This is not just a textbook replacement; it’s reinventing what the textbook could and should be.

The OER Remixer tool allows the rapidly assemble of customized Remixes from existing sources on our comprehensive and ever-growing libraries.

    About Open Infrastructure Award

Open Infrastructure is the set of technologies that enables openness. It encompassess open source tools which enable the creation of open educational resources, their use in educational context, their curation, improvement and remixing, as well as sharing. The “infrastructure” is wider than just open source software, though: it also includes open hardware used in education, open standards enabling interoperability, as well as other open technologies that are instrumental for open education.
