With thirty years of experience as faculty in higher education, Lisa C. Young, Ph.D. currently is the Faculty Administrator for Open Education and Innovation for the Maricopa Community Colleges in the Academic and Student Affairs department and is also a faculty member at Scottsdale Community College.
She provides leadership for the planning, implementation, and growth of open education efforts and academic innovations – including microcredentialing, artificial intelligence and academic technology digital transformation. The goal is to identify, sustain and grow instructional innovation at the institutional level especially as it relates to Open Educational Practices (OEP).
She is a founding member of the Maricopa Millions project which has saved students over $30 million in course materials costs. The Maricopa Millions project has shifted to Open Maricopa with a mission of facilitating widespread use of open, low-cost, quality materials to promote student success, textbook affordability, and increased access to a quality educational experience
Prior to this role, Lisa served as the Faculty Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Scottsdale Community College where she led efforts in eLearning, faculty development, open educational practices, and more.
Lisa served as program director and faculty meeting industry needs through the development and continuous updates of the water resources and occupational safety programs at GateWay Community College for fifteen years. In 1997, Young was one of the first two faculty members to teach online at the college.
The OEGlobal Board recognizes Lisa’s long, dedicated service and leadership for this organization. She has been an active member of Community College Consortium of OER (CCCOER) since 2013 having served on the board of CCCOER as well as Vice President of Professional Development and Co-President of CCCOER. Furthermore, Lisa’s contributions include being elected to the Board of Directors in 2021 and taking on the role of Vice President in 2023.
In the OEG Voices podcast conversation below, Lisa shares her experience of attending the OEGlobal 204 Conference in Slovena, her first international conference, as an awakening experience about OER that “changed the tapestry of my soul, it really did.” That set in motion much of what she has given to the world through her open education leadership at Maricopa, with CCCOER, and the entire OEGlobal organization.
Podcasts from Open Education Global
In another new series of episodes going into 2024 we will be sharing the voices of the OEGlobal Board of Directors, who provide the key leadership and direction for our organization. In this episode you will hear conversations recorded at OEGlobal 2023 in Edmonton with Board Vice-President Lisa Young and Board Member Cathy Casserly.
We hear a bit about their conference experience but also their viewpoints into the open education issues and topics that provide their direction in their role on the Board of Directors, who held a working meeting the day after the conference.
These podcasts are part of the current board’s commitment to engage with the OEGlobal community. We plan to feature a new board member in a series every other month starting in the new year. In addition, the Board is taking turns posting a viewpoint on a topic of interest in OEG Connect, a place where you can respond and speak to them.

Lisa Young’s three words to describe OEGlobal 2023
AI is changing the landscape of the world and education along with it. So I think in particular, with respect to openly licensed content, there’s a moment in time when we have to be proactive as a community to figure out exactly how we want to participate in the AI education space with the content that is openly licensed.
Because otherwise it will happen to us and we want to be proactive. So I think clarity on that is of utmost importance.
