2025 Open Assets Award Winner

twillo

Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology (Germany)

Recognized for OER Infrastructure / Architecture

From the nominator:

The initiative twillo embodies global openness in education through its three-pillar architecture. First, twillo is an OER repository integrating the search index OERSI, which collects and assorts OER from around the world, into its frontend. The OERSI can also be freely integrated into any website via its open plugins or API. Second, twillo actively builds national and international OER communities. Finally, all developments are shared open source and contribute to a sustainable OER ecosystem.

twillo is more than a publicly-funded repository and referatory for Open Educational Resources (OER) in higher education in Germany. twillo offers global benefits through its three-pillar architecture to both open education and the open movement at large: twillo offers a global and open OER search index, is a community-driven initiative, and develops openly and transparently. Through each of the three parts of its architecture twillo advances openness in all aspects.

This OER infrastructure is very well conceived and implemented. It covers a wide set of OER in different formats, topics, and also languages (mostly in German). There are clear explanation about licensing, how to contribute, etc. which provides a good path for creating a community around the portal.

Award Reviewer

For me, this initiative is exemplary for how openness should be implemented in a technical infrastructure. Especially the OERSI part of twillo is outstanding. The twillo website itself is in German, although they offer an on the fly EN-version.

About Open Assets Award

Open Assets are what open education initiatives produce and use, tangible goods (usually digital) with educational purpose and value. Open assets are produced, curated, and distributed in ways that make them freely accessible, usable, and improvable by others.
