Pedagogy Opened: Innovative Theory and Practice

University of North Georgia Press (United States)

Recognized for Open Pedagogy

From the nominator:

Pedagogy Opened embodies the values of open education through both content and process—centering collaboration, equity, and student agency. As a collaborative, openly licensed resource, it models open pedagogy in action and offers educators practical, inclusive tools to transform teaching and learning. It doesn’t just describe open education—it lives it, inspiring sustainable, participatory change across diverse learning contexts.

Pedagogy Opened: Innovative Theory and Practice is an openly licensed, peer reviewed collection that brings together educators, practitioners, and students to explore the philosophies and applications of open pedagogy in contemporary education. This project began as an initiative at the University of North Georgia Press to fill a gap in current publishing opportunities by creating a series focused on open pedagogy. However, as the first volume developed, it quickly became more than a publication about open pedagogy—it evolved into a living expression of open pedagogy itself through collaboration with visual design students at Kennesaw State University.

The inaugural volume of Pedagogy Opened presents seven thought-provoking discussions of research, theory, and practice in and around open pedagogy, each contributing a different set of ideas to spark further conversations. The contributing authors offer concrete, adaptable strategies for teaching that prioritize student agency and community impact.

The focus on amplifying diverse and early-career scholars, as well as co-creation with learners, is to be commended. This project stood out to me because each article had a mix of theoretical and practical resources that can be easily adapted for many levels and types of subjects, with opportunities for further research. It isn’t often that you see this mix in one resource. The peer-review process (built for this project) gave early-career scholars an opportunity to publish and amplify new voices and perspectives, meeting many of the OEGlobal Goals of OE. I was equally impressed with the use of an open pedagogy assignment to include learners in this resource. Pedagogy Opened is more than deserving of an Open Education Awards for Excellence; it really walks the walk of open pedagogy.

Award Reviewer

I love how this project involves students with educators in exploring open education/pedagogy and not only publishes on it, but also embodies it in the processes. I also enjoyed the story of the cover design competition and hoe in the end they all got published (as an opportunity and less competitive but more open in the end).
