2026 Open Assets Award Winner

Virtual Language Environment (AVI)

Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (Mexico)

Recognized as an Open Platform for Self-Directed Language Learning

From the nominator:

The Virtual Language Learning Environment (AVI) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) has expanded access to language education through a free, inclusive, and high-quality open learning model. AVI provides openly accessible resources that help learners develop language skills autonomously, regardless of their economic background or geographic location.

The platform integrates hundreds of interactive learning resources, self-assessment activities, and pedagogically structured materials aligned with international language-learning standards. Its resources are freely available not only to the university community but also to the general public, fostering equity and lifelong learning.

Since its launch in 2018, AVI has attracted more than two million visits annually, demonstrating its broad reach and sustained impact. By transforming language learning into a public good that can be accessed, shared, adapted, and reused, AVI serves as a leading example of how open education can democratize knowledge and expand learning opportunities in Mexico and beyond.

Language skills are needed to open doors to most services. This project sought to provide access to language skills development to all. It provides a model that might be replicated in other contexts.

What deserves recognition by Open Education Global is the way Dr. Villegas has demonstrated that the principles of openness can operate at institutional scale. Her work shows what is possible when an institution commits expertise and infrastructure to making learning genuinely accessible to the public. AVI provides a model that other universities and educational organizations could adapt, particularly in contexts where language access remains a significant educational and economic barrier.

About Open Assets Award

Open Assets are what open education initiatives produce and use, tangible goods (usually digital) with educational purpose and value. Open assets are produced, curated, and distributed in ways that make them freely accessible, usable, and improvable by others.
