2016 Open MOOC Award Winner

Pre-University Calculus

TU Delft (Delft, Netherlands)

Calculus is a cornerstone subject for every science and engineering degree. The Pre-University Calculus MOOC was created to help high school students in the Netherlands and learners worldwide make a strong start at university.

Offered under a Creative Commons license (course link), the course materials are freely available and have also been reused to support TU Delft campus students as well as professionals worldwide who want to refresh their knowledge and skills.

Mathematics is the language of science, engineering, and technology, and calculus forms the foundation of any bachelor’s program in these fields. This course revisits four essential topics: functions, equations, differentiation, and integration to ensure students are well-prepared for university-level calculus. Learners gain a clear understanding of fundamental definitions and concepts, develop problem-solving skills, and build confidence in applying mathematical techniques across disciplines.

The course is self-paced, structured into six modules plus a final exam. Each module combines short lecture videos (3–5 minutes), inspirational examples showing mathematics in action across science and engineering, interactive exercises, homework, and assessments. All materials are available online and free of charge, giving learners an accessible and engaging pathway into higher education.
