As an update shared in March 2025, the Open Access Atlas of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Operative Surgery has continued to grow and has become a widely used open educational resource for medical practitioners around the world
I’m pleased to report that chapters have now been downloaded >5m times, at a rate of a chapter downloaded every 51 seconds over the past 12 months.
There are 164 authors from 23 countries and 170 colleagues who translated the chapters, all for free. Most chapters have been translated into French and Spanish, with some into Portuguese, and colleagues in Mainland China have started translating chapters into Simplified Chinese, that is used in China, Malaysia and Singapore.
It is likely the most used surgical atlas globally for otolaryngology, with the USA being its biggest user. It has not cost a single cent to write/edit/publish…..a wonderful global collaboration based on sharing knowledge and altruism.
