The authors of “Doing the Work” and “Equity-minded Open Course Design” incorporate equity-minded practices such as Transparency in Learning and Teaching, Universal Design for Learning, Culturally Responsive Teaching, and Open Educational Practices into their work. They address, in specific and practical ways, important areas where open textbook authors and course instructors can differentiate themselves with a student-centered approach. They can be delivered synchronously, asynchronously, or as a hybrid program.
“Doing the Work” contains 5 learning modules and an interactive example chapter, all designed to encourage authors to revise their work with equity in mind. Each module starts with clear Learning Objectives and provides participants with actionable techniques and examples for incorporating DEI into an open textbook manuscript. An Apply and Submit activity concludes each module, allowing authors to apply new skills and receive detailed feedback on their work, particularly in remote working environments.
“Equity-minded Open Course Design” introduces instructors to four frameworks for equity-minded open course design, then applies those frameworks to instructional design tools including course maps, module templates, student-centered assessment, H5P, open course packs, and design for continuous improvement. It respects busy instructors’ time by focusing on the most important parts of equity-minded open course development. This handbook encourages collaboration between instructors and instructional designers, and results in a documented course design that is aligned with an open textbook and can be shared widely with an open license.
Both handbooks are currently being adapted into a larger collection of training and process materials for a variety of audiences: open textbook authors, pilot instructors, and project leaders who are developing openly licensed courses and textbooks with an equity lens.
Expanding on the modules created for “Doing the Work” and “Equity-minded Open Course Design,” project partners in any role will be able to find comprehensive information about launching high-quality, openly-licensed course materials with an equity lens.
