This Special Award honors Haruo Takemura’s contribution to Open Education Global as a member of the Open Education Consortium board of Directors 2012-2014.

From the nominator:

Haruo Takemura is recognized for his monumental, lifelong leadership in advancing the open education movement in Japan and globally.

As a founding architect of the Japan OpenCourseWare Consortium (J-OCW) in 2005, which later evolved into Open Education Japan (OEJ), he served as its President and built the national foundation for OER. His vision extended globally as a Board Member of Open Education Consortium (the predecessor to OEGlobal), fostering crucial international collaborations. From launching pioneer OCW and MOOC initiatives at Osaka University to steering JMOOC, his enduring dedication has institutionalized open learning practices.

His current presidency at the Graduate School of Educational Technology marks the culmination of a career dedicated to shaping the future of open pedagogy, making him an exemplary “Person of Open.”

Professor Takemura has demonstrated outstanding leadership in advancing open education over the past two decades, helping build a strong foundation for open learning in Japan and beyond.
